Vogue's Met Gala is one of the biggest nights in fashion, and this year was one of the most exciting of all time.
The theme for this year's event was “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology.” The anticipation leading up to this night was palpable -- everyone eager to see how the stars would interpret this year's theme. Some celebrities came through with jaw-dropping ensembles, but others just dropped the ball.
At this year's Met Gala, certain stars revealed absolutely mind blowing looks. Some of which include Kim Kardashian's futuristic Balmain gown, and Karolína Kurková's cognitive light-up dress which was designed by Marchesa and IBM.

However, some stars really disappointed. One of the worst looks coming from Sarah Jessica Parker, who wore a 'Hamilton' inspired blazer and trouser combo. In years past, SJP has stunned on the red carpet, revealing beautiful interpretations of each theme, but this year's look seemed to really miss the mark.
After being harshly criticized, SJP has decided to explain her thinking behind the design of her look. And while it doesn't necessarily excuse the poor, unflattering, aesthetics of the ensemble, it does show that she stayed true to the theme of the night.

In an article SJP wrote for The New York Times, she discusses the thought process behind her outfit. After considering how technology related to fashion, the idea for her outfit came to her while watching the Broadway musical, 'Hamilton'.
She writes, "All of a sudden, I was like: “Oh, that’s it.” It was such a specific time, and I was curious how we could use technology with that. What would the technology part of the idea be? Fernando introduced us to these embellishment artists in Brooklyn called Le Studio Anthost, who take the idea of old-fashioned couture embroidery and, with technology, apply it to fabrications using paint. It was the perfect marriage of technology and the hand of man".
So while SJP's interpretation of this theme was less obvious, and a little more obscure, her design thinking was right in line with the theme. In fact, her interpretation of the theme may make her ensemble more unique and creative than all the other looks that night.

SJP responded to this post by saying, "Got the memo. Always welcome thoughts but I'm a stickler for the theme and pay close attention to what it means. Every year with great consideration, research and conviction. The understanding of man and machine, how they intersect, when and why is what we considered. Perhaps you weren't aware of the technology used in the details and embellishments of the design. Or perhaps you simply didn't like what I wore which is completely fine but you can't accuse me of not paying close attention and adhering to the theme. With respect and warmest regards, sj".
The 'Sex and the City' star, Sarah Jessica Parker, thought out her Met Gala look more than anyone had expected. The time and energy she put into this ensemble is truly inspiring; and it shows the fashion world should make people think outside the box. There are so many different, unique perspectives in design. If anything can be learned from this Met Gala look, although cliché, it's to not judge a book by it's cover. Although this look wasn't the best of the night, it taught us more about the world of fashion and design. That is, after all, what the Met Gala is all about -- learning, and experiencing, the different facets of fashion.
But let me know what you think! Does SJP's reasoning behind her 'Hamilton' inspired ensemble excuse the lack style?
